Piazza Don Gallo, urban lighting
Piazza Don Gallo – Genova
Since the evening of December 28th, Piazza Don Gallo, in the historic center of Genoa, has been illuminated thanks to a permanent art installation desired by the City Council. The installation was designed by Condiviso, thanks to the creativity and expertise of lighting designer Stefania Toro and realized thanks to the contribution of several designers and lighting professionals, following a participatory design process that involved the residents.
INDEX
A central seat projects luminous writings in multiple languages.
The installation consists of a seat in the center of Piazza Don Gallo which, thanks to perforated walls, projects multilingual content onto the square, a large projection on the facade of the building on the east side, and luminous connections on the accesses from Via Lomellini and Via del Campo.
Respect and a sense of community
The artwork aims to enhance the square from a scenic standpoint and ideally connects it to the main arteries of the historic center. It exalts its founding values – such as respect and a sense of community – and underlines the importance of vegetation for the square (vegetation desired and cared for by the inhabitants), respecting the needs of the residents and integrating the current public lighting.
The Piazza Don Gallo project is part of a larger project conceived for several squares in the historic center, Lighting for Genoa, where lighting design becomes a tool to enhance the city’s architectural heritage and urban fabric.
For the scenic lighting of the square, 17 customized projectors were used, with a total energy consumption of 2.7 KW, less than the consumption of an apartment.
